A big thank you to Arrtx for sending me this lovely set of 48 very soft and vibrant oil pastels to play with and share with you. Thank you for doing this video 😊 Very informative. I’ve binged videos about oil pastels lately and this was very helpful to see. Also nice that you took some time explaining how you use the colored pencils in the end. Now that it’s been a years, what are your thoughts on these two brands and oil pastels in general? 😊 Anything you’ve learned that you’d like to add to this video?

    Have you ever compared kuretake 13 with pentel pocket brush pen? I love it but find it very difficult to control the thickness of the lines. Was it easy with the number 13?

    I was watching some people painting miniatures with these paints and they said that the coverage is great. I wonder if the paper is absorbing the paint too much, maybe adding a layer of gesso or glassing/matte medium to the paper could help with the coverage?

    Nice review. Thanks. How do you think these compare to Mungyo Gallery? They seem softer. Maybe too soft (for me). I'm looking for a possible alternative to Mungyo -- in case they become hard to find, and also because they don't have open stock.

    That feed is being used by Pilot Metro as well as the 78G. I don't know if 78G is available for you but this model is basically just a Metro with a plastic body.

    Both the regular and acrylic gouache have a toothy chalky finish that you can build on with other media like pencil but matte acrylic has a more slick and tacky finish. This is a big difference for me because I work in mixed media. I like to create a toned or gradient acrylic gouache fixed surface to work on as an underlayer and then block in my detail elements with a Caran d'Ache Aquarelle watercolor pencil. Then finally the designer gouache top layer. I can not draw on matte acrylic, it is too slick and tacky.

    You mentioned oil pastels on oil paint pad ,would one have to gesso firstly . Having used the varnish which seems to work ,if I wanted to frame would I have to still keep the art work away from the glass and use a mount . Thank you

    • @Sandrinesgallery
      @Sandrinesgallery Місяць тому

      Oil paper is ready to use with oil paint and pastels, no need for gesso. No matter what, it's always better to keep your artwork away from the glass. So matting it is a good idea even if varnished.

    I have to say that, except as a travel or plein air convenience, I’ve never seen the logic of having something like this and using it on a palette. It seems like it would be easier to just use regular watercolor. Thanks for the video!

    I am having a lot of brands! I am using all of them depending on what is my subjet and the support used! My preferences are still Pentel Arts as first layers, then I am using the others waxy brands for realism project (with Mont Marte and Artecho) and oily brands for textures paintings like impasto with knives with Haiya, Kuelox, Arrtx, As archival paintings I will stay with Mungyo extra soft, Caran d’Ache Neopastel, Hawon, then Sennelier at the final layers! There are no bad oil pastels it is depending what the type of paper used such as watercolor 300gsm Fabriano cold press or Canson Montval if the best cheaper ones with multimedia Clairefontaine papers A3 are good for studies and exercices! When you are good enough you can use pastelmat Clairefontaine pastel card from Sennelier, or wood panel or good canvas with gesso layer with sand paper 600 grit before applying oil pastel! I like the bolder lines you’re getting from this pen and even the way you’re exploiting what limited flex it has. All my Jinhao pens are good with their standard M and F nibs, but I’ve just got an X159 and it is buttery smooth on the paper. My X750’s are my favourites but the new X159 is edging them out as it’s just so impressive. I’m mainly interested in improving my awful penmanship but might consider drawing after watching talented artists use fountain pens with such effectiveness. 👍🏻

  • @ThreenaddiesRexMegistus

    I received a 450 and an X750 with these nibs installed. Neither would feed properly. Then I watched a video by Kristina Greke in which she alters the radius of the nib with pliers and this was done and gave immediate results. You must have hit the sweet spot with this one, and I wish I had a fraction of your talent. I do like the X750 and have about 5 of them. Going to try this with an unlinked 159 I have. Thanks for sharing! 👍🏻

    I am wondering can you paint with Acrylic Gouache on larger stretched canvas without it cracking like it does with regular Gouache? Do you have to put a seal on the acrylic gouache when your done painting on the canvas?

    • @Sandrinesgallery
      @Sandrinesgallery Місяць тому

      I prefer firmer surfaces, so I haven't tried, but I don't think it will crack since acrylic gouache had the same binder as acrylic paint. It's always up to you if you want to varnish your painting or not.

    The only issue is that this half the life of the nib, as these nibs rust, so the ink accelerate the rusting process. These nibs are mainly used with dip pen and dried after use to extend their life.

  • @Mac_04
    @Mac_04 Місяць тому

    I recently assembled a similar setup, and it has proven to be exceptional for writing. The ink flows generously, requiring minimal effort to produce smooth lines. For added flourish, a slight increase in pressure suffices. The nib is remarkably flexible, so caution is necessary to avoid splaying and potential damage. Although I purchased a nib with an ebonite feeder, I opted not to use it due to the extensive adjustments required, as noted by others. The Jinhao X750 paired with the FPR UF nib was nearly a perfect match. Initially, I faced some challenges as I was pressing too hard, causing the nib to release excessive ink and dry out quickly. However, with patience and a gentle touch, this combination offers a truly delightful writing experience.

    I haven't tried the Neopastels yet but I have the 40-set of Holbein and I find them absolutely fantastic. Wrapping them up with sticky notes takes care of the mess, but I readily admit that considering their steep price point, the company should market them with a wrapper. Definitely do your research for open stock merchants before buying sets. Thanks for sharing!

    Watercolor markers aren’t for a lot of people because they approach them as if they’re watercolor paints. They were designed to be a drawing & painting medium so they’re naturally versatile. The cellulose paper I use is Strathmore 400 Mixed Media paper. It has a very similar feel to hot press watercolor paper with its vellum surface. I’ve done great work on that paper it’s my go to. I love using Faber Castell watercolor markers and their watercolor pencils together.

    12:55 that's bladder convertor, or con-B this is how all fountain pens used to have ink in them, its not the best to use and cracks over time (10-20 years that is) they are included in the lower end pilot pens because they are the cheapest to make, and they include convertors with all their pens

    The desk pens in the middle are my favorite pens for drawing. You can leave them inked with carbon ink for months and they will write immediately when you need them. But as new they don't come with waterproof ink.

      Do they write fast? Like the inkflow bit.. the most bothersome thing about my old school pens to me is when they skip/the inkflow cant keep up.. Im also quite prone to hand pain.. so having to use pressure gets painfull fast..

    • @superXfairXgirl
      @superXfairXgirl Місяць тому

      @@mikado_mHi ! If you want a pen that writes fast I highly recommend you the "Pentel Liquid Gel Ink 0.7 ball" => yes, it's a rollerball, but you really should try it, flow is great and dries rather quickly. It's not the same fancy pleasure than a fountain pen, but it really does the job of being fast, smooth, flowy and reliable. I am not the wealthiest, but I think this is the best pen I ever used.
